NARRATIVE LANDSCAPE : THE FERRIES
As a part of FLO’s six methodologies, ‘Conceptualization of a Narrative’ is an important component in our method of design approach. It is integral to our projects in our everyday practice.
Some of FLO’s early projects haven’t fully integrated our methodologies due to differentiated needs of projects from clients. However, as our projects and mutual trusts with clients grew over these years, we are able to take a more comprehensive approach in conceptualizing strong narratives through our practices, and we’d like to share a few completed projects that best demonstrate our ‘Landscape Narratives’.
Hangzhou Bay Demonstration Project
Hangzhou Bay Demonstration Project was completed in 2018. Our earlier projects were mostly associated with traditional residential typology and we haven’t had real opportunities to implement strong narrative approach. When the client of this project expressed their aspiration of a design that is contemporary in its public-realm image, we did not hesitate to take on the challenge in creating a strong narrative-based landscape. Although it is a residential demonstration project and fell short in many ways, we still felt such efforts were worthwhile to retrospectively take another look in hindsight.
The design area of the project site is focused on the front entry space into the demonstration building with typical layout logic for its typology. The space is connected by a canopied corridor that takes visitors through a series of intermediate spaces and arriving into the open lawn. The back side of the demonstration site is dominated by water which is also connected with the existing natural waterways in our Hangzhou Bay setting.
The team was only given less than a month to design. When we visited the site, we spotted numerous traditional wooden ferries along the waterways surrounding the site, which gave us the inspiration for the narrative approach in this particular project.
Form(less) and Meaning(less)

Our artistic conception lies in abstraction of landscape forms that evoke an user’s sensory and emotional connection with the setting. It should be both formal but also formless, and it is meant to be open for viewer’s own interpretation. Through exploration of imagery, we aimed to create experiences beyond realism.
We used ‘Ferries’ as the narrative driver, explored characteristics associated with its forms and meanings, and ultimately transformed abstraction into figurative expressions in the design materialization.
