Design of a multifunctional farm on the roof of a university

Landprocess

Landprocess has created a stacked rooftop farm on top of the Law and Politics University in Bangkok, Thailand, covering an area of 22000 square meters, aimed at imitating mountainous terrain. This project perfectly combines elements of "architecture" and "landscape architecture". The architectural form evolved from the H-shaped plane, with a facade resembling a large mountain and a large area of garden green space on the upper part, making it a sustainable multi-purpose infrastructure.

At first, the new campus building was just an ordinary building, but the birth of the rooftop farm was the result of designers convincing the architecture and engineering team to collaborate with her to develop a new concept. Considering that a large park is being developed in front of the building, the designer proposed a bold idea: why not connect the rooftop green space with the ground level park? In the end, both the design team and the client agreed with this idea because they unanimously believed that doing so would have a greater social impact.

Nowadays, urbanization has rapidly consumed agricultural land, causing cultivated land to move away from cities. By 2050, 80% of the worlds population will reside in cities. To ensure global food security and environmental health, cities must utilize wasted space and its runoff to effectively produce food. Landscape designers have reused abandoned roofs and implemented climate solutions together with Thammasat Urban Roof Farm (TURF), the largest organic roof farm in Asia.

Inspired by local ingenuity and traditional agricultural practices, the stacked green roofs of urban agriculture at the University of Law and Political Science have formed retention lawns that can slow down, absorb, and store rainwater, while also being used for growing food. All runoff will be filtered through each layer of soil and stored in four reservoirs, capable of collecting up to 11718 cubic meters of water for roof irrigation and future use.

Another issue addressed by this project is to help students and community members rediscover their history and educate them on sustainable organic farming practices. A century ago, the original site of the rooftop farm was a rice plantation. With the expansion of Bangkok, the rice fields were flattened, but through this project, rice production returned in modern form. Through volunteer service, 40000 students and nearby residents learned how to plant and harvest this cultural landscape heritage.

Faced with the challenge of heavy rainfall in Bangkok, the rooftop farm has adopted innovative design. Inspired by terraced agriculture in mountainous areas of Southeast Asia, it utilizes complex structures and gravity to pour rainwater down from each layer. Rainwater winds down the slope, and each layer collects the runoff from the previous layer to help absorb, filter, and purify rainwater. The efficiency of this structure in slowing down water flow is 20 times higher than traditional roofs, and all runoff is captured by four reservoirs at the foot of the building, which can hold up to 3095570 gallons of water.

To address the lack of healthy organic food in the local area, the design team created a productive rooftop landscape. In order to absorb all of this runoff, Voraakhom introduced 50 edible species, including rice, local vegetables and herbs, and fruit trees. The roof can grow 20 tons of organic food annually, which is enough for 80000 meals in the campus cafeteria. Food residues are composted and returned to rooftop farms, creating a sustainable food cycle.

The rooftop landscape also helps solve the problem of using fossil fuels for power generation. The photovoltaic panels installed on the roof can generate 500000 watts of electricity per hour.

The design divides the rooftop space into four equally accessible parts, each representing the core elements of democracy - people, freedom, equality, and universal love. To reflect this spirit of egalitarianism, 12 social spaces have been set up in the terraced farmland as outdoor classrooms.

The top layer of the terraced fields has a large circular theater space that provides a 360 degree panoramic view. Returning to the entrance on the ground, there is another stepped circular theater for activities, inside which are life-size sculptures of the two founders of the university.

This kind of infrastructure is necessary for us to address climate change, floods, pollution, and the lack of high-quality fresh agricultural products in an urbanizing world. The most successful form adopts an integrated design approach, where architects, landscape designers, and engineers cross disciplinary boundaries and work together to create better projects for humanity and the environment.
